I am the Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant for Letchworth and Baldock. I have been a police officer for 13 years, the vast majority of which has been in North Herts. Myself and my team of experienced officers are committed to addressing the issues that matter most to you to ensure that Letchworth and Baldock continue to be safe communities in which to live and work. I joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1994 and have enjoyed a variety of front line operational roles across the county since. I am delighted to be the Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector for North Herts and to have responsibility for leading Letchworth, Baldock, Hitchin and Royston Safer Neighbourhood Teams who are striving to make a difference throughout the area and keep crime low. I am looking forward to maintaining strong relationships with key partner agencies, such as North Herts District Council, and working together with them to ensure North Herts continues to be a safe place to live, work and socialise.

Theft
To tackle shoplifting and theft from person in Letchworth and Baldock town centres and local retail outlets. We will ensure high-visibility patrols happen, boost relationships with businesses and offer the public crime prevention advice.

Letchworth and Baldock town and retail centres

Following on from the positive impact that increased local Safer Neighbourhood Team presence had in retail outlets and commercial centres across Letchworth and Baldock over the Christmas period, increased levels of patrols have been maintained over the past couple of months. The visible presence of officers in these areas not only deters potential offenders but reassures the public that our towns are very safe places to live, work and visit. By working closely with local retailers we ensure timely reporting of offences to maximise the likelihood of offenders being identified and brought justice. Your local team works tirelessly to make the area hostile environments for individuals who may seek to shoplift or target the vulnerable. We have distributed a large amount of "Purse Buddies" to elderly members of the public to alert them if someone interferes with their bag or purse. Often the simplest ideas have the greatest positive impact!

Anti-social use of cars, motorbikes and mopeds in Letchworth and Baldock, particularly at retail outlet car parks. Patrols are being conducted and powers enforced.

Now that the days are starting to get longer and the weather improves, we are seeing an increase in reports of the anti-social use of vehicles. This is predominantly relating to motorbikes being used off road. In order to address this, your local team is working in partnership with other Safer Neighbourhood Teams to increase the number of quad-bike trained officers available to respond to reported incidents. The use of police quad-bikes has increased in recent months as part of on-going structured and intelligence-led police operations. This work is starting to have a positive impact on the problem. We will continue to utilise legislative powers to seize vehicles and prosecute those who act in such an anti-social manner. I would urge the public to continue to report incidents.

Vehicle Crime
There has been an increase in theft from motor vehicle offences in Letchworth and Baldock recently. Police are working to address this through crime prevention advice, high visibility intelligence led patrols and targeting of suspects.

The concerted efforts of your local Safer Neighbourhood Team continues to have a positive impact in reducing the number of reported motor vehicle offences. Since the last update in January 2019 the number of reported offences is less than during the same period last year. Increased intelligence-led patrols, early forensic evidence capture and the assistance of the community have resulted in several arrests and charges of offenders. Despite this improvement, we will not become complacent and continue to provide appropriate crime prevention advice and free tool marking. Again, the assistance of the public is at the core of what we do and pivotal to our success and as such I would urge anybody who has any information about the type of crime, or if they would like advice or tools marked free of charge, to contact us.
