Neighbourhood Priorities for South Wigston

There has been a concern relating to a group around Blaby Road, Tesco Carpark and the carpark for Lidl/Wicks. The group has been causing ASB around this area and we are working with the local community to try and combat this issue. We are also using social media to engage with parents and carers so they can also work with us and educate the young people who are causing this issues. If anyone has any information or see the group in the area is urged to call 101 and quote Sentinel reference 84476.

You local beat team have identified local youths that were causing issues around the area. They have been put on various monitoring Policing plans to ensure that their behaviour is monitored. However since our intervention there appears to be a reduced ASB in the area. We would urge people to continue to call us to report acts of ASB in the area.

There has been growing concerns with vehicle crime in the area. We have received a number of crime reports relating to "Theft from Motor Vehicles". Majority of this is criminals going around and checking car doors. Those vehicles that are insecure have had items stolen. There has been also a few incidents where forced entry has been committed as well. Due to the community concerns "Op Pioneer" has been launched in order to monitor vehicle crime in the area.

‘Op Pioneer’ was launched in the area to help combat theft from motor vehicles, most commonly theft of tools from vans. Over the past few weeks officers have been working hard to help reduce vehicle crime and as such several people have been arrested across the Leicestershire area in connection with such crimes. We have also used 'Social Media' to encourage people to secure their vans and to continue to take valuable tools out of their vehicles. Please could I reassure the community that we are still patrolling your area so please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Thank you everyone that has assisted the police in their enquiries.

Burglary – Your Local Beat Team are working hard keeping your area safe. Once again we see this concern for Burglary has adopted as a priority for the South Leicester area. It is sad to say there has been an increase of breaks mostly in the area of Knighton and Oadby. This year we are looking at new ways in how we can reduce burglaries, gain public confidence as we want you to feel reassured that we are doing the level best to keep you safe. We have recently worked hard forming relations within our communities by using Neighbourhood Link as a communication tool and social media. We have also established key individual networks within our communities forming Neighbourhood Watch. As for the unforeseen crime reports we obtained last year on Burglaries; we have launched ‘Operation Behold’ which is focusing on our top priority and to reassure our strong communities by working together. #OpBehold

Your local Beat team has been working hard during the the last few months. We have spoken to previous burglary victims and have formed many Neighbourhood Watch groups so that the Police can work closer with communities. We urge communities to continue to call us on any suspicious activity and remain vigilant.

Officers have identified a high level of public concern following a number of incidents of school children being approached or followed by strangers in vehicles in the South Wigston area in a two week period. Victims and their parents have been visited and taken details about incidents. Most of the vehicles and persons involved have been identified and spoken to. No offences have been identified at this stage although there are a small number of remaining enquiries. Extra patrols have been conducted in the affected areas of South Wigston at school times and in the early evenings.
A stranger danger event was held in conjunction with Shane Varney’s Karate Club where inputs were provided to parents and children. Further inputs are planned at the primary schools and two nurseries in the coming weeks. Social media and Neighbourhood link have been used to update, reassure and educate around Stranger danger and these incidents in particular.

Officers have been doing extra patrols and been liaising with local partners. So far there have been no further incidents in the area.

There have been a number of calls regarding anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and public order offences at Tesco South Wigston, locations on Blaby Road, South Wigston, and at the nearby Bassett Centre over the last few weeks. These incidents involve groups of youths, some of whom have been identified. Extra patrols will be conducted to prevent further problems, provide reassurance and to identify those involved in any further incients. Work is being done with those identified as being involved in conjunction with other agencies and will also be offered to other young people identified

Your 'South Wigston Beat Team' have worked closely with local businesses and amenities. We have identified a number of young people involved in anti-social behaviour in the area. The number of complaints has considerably reduced following increased patrols at specific times and locations. The young people involved have or are due to shortly to receive home visits or appointments at the police station to manage and address their behaviour. The Youth Offending Service have also been involved with some young people being referred to them and training offered to staff at some locations to assist them in dealing with this type of occurrence on their premises.

A problem solving plan has been commenced for the Kenilworth Road area of South Wigston following a number of reports of anti-social vehicle use and other problem behaviour. Cars and motorbikes at excess speed have been reported as a regular issue as have groups of young males acting in an anti-social manner on mopeds, on foot causing damage and on bicycles cycling in a dangerous and reckless manner.

Following complaints about anti-social use of vehicles and speeding vehicles in the area as well as reports of groups of youths causing ASB on foot and on cycle which we have been focusing on your street. the beat team can update you that the following work around one specific address there has been a reduction in calls. Further to this speed monitoring was conducted. A small percentage of vehicles were found to be driving at excess speed. Two Youths were issued with written warnings after seeing them using the vehicles in an anti social manner. The groups found were spoken to along with their parents advised.
There have been no further reports of issues of this nature. I am aware there are concerns around speeding in the wider area and would recommend contacting Leicestershire County Council highways with any further concerns.

In general over the summer months we experience an increase in ASB on Blaby Road Park in South Wigston.

Officers have completed high visibility and plain clothes patrols of the Blaby Road park over the month of August. We have also had a number of events such as Supersonic Boom and community engagements at the park including a Pokémon engagement event to raise awareness of mobile phone crime.

One main perpetrator for incidents reported at the park has been dealt with by Police recently resulting in a condition for him not to go to the Park any more. Hopefully this will deter any further issues.

Please let us know if there are any ongoing issues in the Park for us to take action on.

Thank you - The South Leicester Neighbourhood Team.

To tackle vehicles driving in excess of the speed limit in the area of Gloucester Crescent and Dorset Avenue.

The Police beat team for South Wigston, along with Police Volunteers have conducted numerous ‘Speed checks’ upon sites upon Dorset Avenue, Gloucester Crescent and Saffron Road, areas of the beat area. These have been conducted at various times of the day, so as to capture different parts of the day, as it is clear that at times the roads are very quiet, and at other times the roads are very busy and generally slower due to people going to and from work and local schools. There has also been covert monitoring of the sites mentioned by the highways department and it is clear that there are a number of vehicles that drive at excess speed upon these roads, however, the results of the monitoring which are valid for two years, show that the area would not be given monies or extra resources to combat this issue.

That being said, the beat team recognise that this is a concern amongst local residents – especially those who live upon Dorset Avenue and Gloucester Crescent, and we will look to complete ad-hoc speed checks along with Police Volunteers in the future. Residents upon these streets have been notified of how to join and be part of the ‘COMMUNITY SPEED-WATCH’ scheme, which is funded and run through the Leicestershire County Council. This scheme gives residents the opportunity to combat this issue as a community and would be fully supported and backed by the local beat team.

Monitoring parking issues raised by local
residents, and where necessary issuing tickets for
parking offences, in Healy Street, Garden Street,
and Canal Street, South Wigston, after 6pm
Monday to Friday

By taking regular patrols in the area advising local residents and users if vehicles were parked inappropriately, dangerously or were obstructing others. Since the start of the priority in October 2009, only a small amount of tickets have been issued - in all cases every effort was made to locate the owners of the vehicles to advise them first. In November the team conducted street consultations, one of which started at 5.30 am, to cater for all residents and employees of local businesses. This proved very successful, with a local councillor also in attendance. In early 2010 all the Neighbourhood's findings from the briefings, comments and recommendations will be passed onto the County Council in order to progress the situation and ultimately seek a solution.
