Neighbourhood Priorities for Grantham Rural South

There is a common complaint of speeding in villages across the area, when possible speed checks and enforcement are carried out.

Many villages now have reactive speed signs in place to remind drivers of their speed and what it should be. These signs can have the capability to record data on the frequency of speeding motorists, providing information for where and when to target speed enforcement.

As with school parking, this is a problem which needs and combination of enforcement, education and social responsibility, those who do exceed the speed limit have to live somewhere? The challenge is to get the driver/resident of village ‘A’ to drive through village ‘B’ in the manner they expect others to travel through their own village.

It is frequently reported that parents are parking in manner causing inconvenience to residents and putting children at risk by parking close to junctions so children and parents cannot see to cross.

Patrols of schools at the start and end of the school day will be carried out and parents given advice regarding their parking, parking at school times has to be enforced by education, if there is a reliance on ticketing offenders the problem will only stop when parents believe that someone is available to carry out enforcement. Working with the school, children and parents has led to some improvement at schools but the issue always continues as a new school year starts and the new parents bring children to school.

Much of the crime that directly affects the rural community is carried out by the opportunist criminal who whilst travelling through a village takes a chance or returns at another time. The main deterrent is visible policing and by taking security measures that can be continuous used. If an alarm is overly complex or padlocks difficult to fit they will soon stop being used, any security measure is only effective when it is in place.

PCSO Bowden will give crime prevention advice to anyone looking to improve security.  He can also arrange for a visit by a crime prevention specialist if required.

Deterrent and prevention are far better than having to try and identify a culprit after the offence has occurred, all suspicious activity should be reported via the 101 non-emergency number.
