The primary role of Police Community Support Officers (CSOs) is to provide reassurance to communities through high visibility uniformed patrol.

The area commanders deploy PCSOs in a way which complements the work of neighbourhood police officers (Neighbourhood Beat Managers) by focusing predominantly on lower level crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour.

The areas I cover are Glebe, Biddick and Columbia.

After starting as a 24/7 response officer, I am now the Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Glebe and Biddick in Washington.

My role as a Neighbourhood Beat Manager is to assist and protect the local community and encourage the reduction and prevention of crime. I will look to achieve this by:

- Identifying the problems of crime, disorder and other quality of life issues experienced by communities or individuals, particularly vulnerable groups, in Glebe and Biddick.

- By being involved in problem solving initiatives aimed at addressing the underlying causes of many of these issues.

- Providing a high visibility, uniformed presence throughout Glebe and Biddick to reassure the local community and reduce their fear of crime.

- Looking at persistent issues and trying to find long-term solutions to these.

This role is conducted with the help of partner agencies which include Gentoo and Sunderland City Council and my main objective is to improve and maintain quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors to the area.

I am currently based in Washington, Sunderland my role is to ensure and enable the provision of neighbourhood policing by working in partnership with the community and other agencies.

The Southern Area Command consists of the local authority areas of Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council, including:

Boldon, Cleadon, East/South/West Shields, Hebburn, Jarrow, Riverside and Whitburn, Sunderland City Centre, Houghton, Hetton, Roker, Ryhope, Seaburn, Silksworth, and Washington.

The PCSOs compliment the work being done by the teams of Neighbourhood Beat Managers, providing people with a reassuring, visible police presence.

Deploying PCSOs in this way enhances the problem solving approach to policing, enabling us to tackle local crime and disorder which affect people's quality of life.
